The Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) is one of Africa’s most remarkable examples of countries working together for conservation, tourism and community development. Covering approximately 520,000 square kilometres, KAZA brings together Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe in one shared conservation landscape.
The area stretches across the Okavango and Zambezi river basins, creating a powerful vision: wildlife and ecosystems do not recognize international borders, so conservation must work across borders too.
The importance of this union goes far beyond protecting animals. By cooperating, the five countries can coordinate conservation policies, wildlife management, anti-poaching programmes, research, tourism development and community initiatives. KAZA contains numerous national parks, forest reserves, conservancies, sanctuaries and wildlife-management areas. It supports extraordinary biodiversity, including large elephant populations, African wild dogs, hundreds of bird species and diverse plant life.
Tourism is one of the greatest opportunities within KAZA. Visitors can experience several countries, cultures, landscapes and wildlife destinations within one interconnected region. Tourism creates employment and business opportunities for guides, accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators, craft producers and local communities. When responsibly managed, tourism can generate income that supports conservation while helping communities benefit from living alongside wildlife.

Mosi Oa Tunya (Victoria falls, Zimbabwe)
The tourism attractions across KAZA are exceptional. In Namibia, visitors can explore Bwabwata National Park, Mudumu National Park, Nkasa Rupara National Park, the Zambezi Region, community conservancies, the Kwando River and the Zambezi River. Botswana offers the spectacular Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe River.
Zambia provides Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, Lower Zambezi, Kafue, Sioma Ngwezi and outstanding river and wildlife experiences. Zimbabwe offers Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, Mana Pools, Lake Kariba and the Zambezi Valley. Angola contributes vast and emerging wilderness areas, particularly in the Cuando Cubango region, with significant potential for wildlife, cultural and adventure tourism.
KAZA conservation efforts address major challenges including elephant management, habitat protection, human-wildlife conflict, illegal wildlife trade, anti-poaching and biodiversity protection. Conservation also involves communities because millions of people live within or around the wider KAZA landscape. Sustainable development therefore requires conservation to be linked with education, livelihoods, agriculture and responsible tourism.

The spirit of KAZA can be captured beautifully in a simple travel poem:
“Waking up in Namibia,
Breakfast in Botswana,
Lunch in Zimbabwe,
And Dinner in Zambia.”
For travellers, KAZA offers adventure, photography, wildlife viewing, cultural encounters, river cruises, walking safaris, fishing, birdwatching and unforgettable scenery. Every journey can contribute to a larger story of shared responsibility and African unity.
These words imagine a journey where international borders become connections rather than barriers. They celebrate the remarkable possibility of experiencing Southern Africa as one interconnected destination, where wildlife, cultures, rivers and communities are united.
KAZA is ultimately more than a tourism destination. It is a partnership between five nations committed to protecting one of Africa’s greatest natural treasures while creating opportunities for present and future generations. Its message is powerful: when countries conserve together, communities benefit together, and tourism can become a bridge for cooperation, prosperity, peace and sustainable development.
